Please note: we have another posting for followers. You are welcome to use that one, but we are asking followers to demonstrate familiarity with our storytelling approach. We are not asking that from applicants using this form.

Who We Are

Mythcreants is an online publication for speculative fiction storytellers. We analyze popular works, theorize on storytelling craft, raise awareness about the social impacts of stories, and explore the technical aspects of writing and tabletop roleplaying.

While technically a business, we rely on reader patronage and the support of a mostly volunteer team. We are slowly monetizing the publication by developing products and services to serve our community, and to that end, we’d like to bring on an additional content editor.

Mythcreants content editors read outlines, short stories, and novels, and then deliver a separate written report that focuses on big-picture issues and opportunities. This usually includes strengthening the plot, making the characters more compelling, and bringing out what’s unique about their world. We also offer gentle social justice feedback.

Editing services are sold to our followers, so it’s critical that our editors can deliver a Mythcreants-style content edit. That means using Mythcreants terminology, storytelling philosophies, and editing methodology.

Please see the following articles for some of our foundational principles and more contentious positions:

You can learn more about our methodology by reviewing our content editing page.

Position & Pay

This is a part-time contract position that is paid on a per-project basis. As a contractor, you will work remotely and set your own schedule. We expect the number and size of projects to slowly increase over time.

The position starts with up to 25 hours of paid training at a rate of $20/hour. Training will be paced depending on your availability; it may take anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple months.

Once training is complete, projects will be paid at a rate of $174 plus .72¢ / word for manuscripts and 2.16¢ / word for outlines. That means $246 for a 10,000 word short story and $390 for a 10,000 word outline.

We need a candidate who:

  • Is great at dissecting stories
  • Is on board with Mythcreants’ storytelling philosophy
  • Loves speculative fiction
  • Values diversity and equality
  • Has strong communication skills
  • Can work independently and meet deadlines

While we don’t require any specific degrees or experience, we consider all of these to be assets in a candidate:

  • Editing experience or training (any type)
  • Freelancing experience
  • Blogging or article writing experience, particularly in media critique
  • A record of social justice advocacy
  • Lived experience of oppression
