The game master has a lot of responsibilities. They choose the system, they stay up late planning the story, they help the players come up with character concepts. It’s intimidating to the inexperienced, but it doesn’t have to be. Join us this week as Mike opens the deep well of his GMing experiences while Dash asks about everything that a beginning game master might want to know. Together they’ll explore which systems are right for specific play styles, how much of the rules a GM needs to know, and why the heck we refer to some systems as “crunchy” and others as “chewy.”

Having read old Dragon magazines from what seems to be before people’s time here, “crunch” was originally contrasted with “fluff” — a term that’s fallen out of favor nowadays in favor of “lore” for various reasons (probably for the better). This may be the first I’ve heard of “chewy” as a contrast to “crunchy” or a game system descriptor, but it does make a good deal of sense to me.
