We’ve all seen stories get sequels, even when they really weren’t necessary, but what about the reverse? What happens when a story really would have benefited from a sequel that never materialized? That’s what we’re talking about this week, joined for a third time by special guest Rhys. We’ll talk about what makes a story need a sequel, why those sequels might not come, and when the desire for a sequel is really just a desire for more of the original.
P.S. Our bills are paid by our wonderful patrons. Could you chip in?
Man, one of these days I have got to watch Teen Wolf and Avatar.
Hopefully we haven’t oversold them!
On a sidenote, you don’t have to hunt down physical copies of Arcanum on Amazon. The game has been on sale at GOG.com for many years now: https://www.gog.com/game/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura The original Fallout installments are also available there. The only downside is no physical box and no physical CD/DVD, but the installer and downloads bought are completely DRM-free.
Troika were beginning making a sequel in the earty 2000s, but it never got much further than a prototype, and then they closed their doors after 2003. I’m sort of glad, because they wanted to do it in a 3D engine that would look dated by now. The isometric perspective of the original game, while also a bit dated, still has an artistic charm to it even nowadays.
