Comics: Once Upon a Trope

Rescue Attempt

Transcript

A hero lunges after a person whose hand is sticking out of a pool of lava. The hero’s sidekick looks at her in alarm.

Hero: Nooooo!

Sidekick: What are you doing?! You can’t survive lava!

The hero has turned back toward the sidekick.

Hero: I’m a selfless hero, and my friend just perished in front of me! I have to try, no matter the odds.

Sidekick: But you won’t save him, you’ll die, and all the people depending on you will also die!

The hero hands the sidekick a glowing gemstone and some cuffs. The sidekick looks a little surprised.

Hero: That’s why it’s your job to restrain me. Here, you’ll need these magic cuffs and this bit of kryptonite.

The hero is reaching for the lava, but is being held back by the exhausted smaller sidekick using cuffs and kryptonite.

Hero: Noooooo! I have to save him!

Ah, yes, selflessness. Gotta love it when a hero is unreasonable.

I can see the sidekick standing there, shaking their head.

Sidekick: WTF?! This is the second time this week. I’m so sick of it, I’m going to apply for a job as a hench with the villain. That can’t be worse…
