88 – Portraying AI

The Mythcreant Podcast

This week, Oren downloads two new minds into the podcast: Rhys and Elly. These disembodied voices claim they were once human, but who can say in a world where memories can be written like software? Together, the (mostly) human co-hosts discuss how to depict AI on page and screen, along with some of their favorite and least favorite examples. Give it a listen, unless you’re some kind of robot, in which case would you like to be a guest?

I’m surprised that there was no mention of warforged from the Eberron campaign setting for D&D. While they were created with the specific purpose of being soldiers, they are in fact sapient… and the war they were built to fight in just abruptly ended and they were unexpectedly granted their freedom. They vary in what they decide to do with this new situation, but are generally starting from a soldier’s POV and are still regarded by some around them as weapons first.
